Welcome!

My name is Ashley Caval, and I am a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and private teacher based in Weymouth, MA. A 2009 graduate of Dartmouth College, I received my BA in Music with a concentration in electroacoustic composition.  While at Dartmouth, I studied viola with Marcia Cassidy, voice (contralto) with Louis Burkot, kemancheh and Persian classical music with Kayhan Kalhor, and Hindustani classical music with Kenneth Zuckerman.  My composition teachers include Jon Appleton, Charles Dodge, Spencer Topel, and Kui Dong. One of the reasons I pursued music in college was that it is, by nature, so interdisciplinary, so I've also completed coursework in history (focusing in British history and medieval history/musicology), physics, German studies, and mathematics in particular.

Since moving to the Boston area in 2010, I have worked to develop a dual identity as an active performer in the classical and heavy metal communities and as a private academic/test prep tutor and private teacher.  In Fall 2013, I launched my own private tutoring company, offering both in-person and virtual tutoring and consulting services.

As a teacher,  my aim is to translate my love of knowledge across all subjects. Over the years, I have gravitated towards non-traditional students: students with various learning difficulties and students on the gifted track. In addition to supplementing in-school learning, my aim is to help support those students who maybe aren't served as well as others in the traditional setting. Somewhat uncommon among people who do what I do, I am capable of teaching across most subjects through at least a high school level (and do, frequently), though I have particular leanings towards math, American and European history, and chemistry. The pandemic has forced me to take a closer look at taking advantage of the online space, and I am actively working on content creation to help give resources to a wider audience. I am going to be posting new content here and hopefully across platforms regularly, so check back and feel free to use my work with your child, in your classroom, or to refresh/strengthen your own skills.

This site is under a total overhaul currently, but take a look around, and if you have questions or are looking for some academic support, feel free to reach out through the contact page!
